Buying an Appliance: Measure the Space and the Daily Job

A fridge, washer or cooking appliance needs to fit your home and your habits. Start with capacity, installation and upkeep before comparing offers.

A fridge, washer or cooking appliance needs to fit your home and your habits. Start with capacity, installation and upkeep before comparing offers.

Measure the Whole Route

Measure the space where the appliance will be used and the route it must travel to get there. Doorways, stairs and tight corners can matter as much as the final opening. Keep the manufacturer’s required ventilation and service clearances in the plan.

Check door movement and access to controls. A refrigerator that fits between cabinets may still be inconvenient if the door cannot open far enough to remove a shelf. Use the installation drawing for the exact model.

Match Capacity to Real Use

Describe a normal week of cooking, cleaning or food storage. Think about typical loads as well as occasional larger jobs. Bigger capacity is useful when you need it, but it can take more space and may not improve everyday convenience.

Read which capacity measure the listing uses. Compare like with like and ask for clarification if a headline number is unclear. Check noise information and placement constraints when the machine will sit near living or sleeping areas.

Add Ownership Costs

Include delivery, installation, required accessories, consumables and routine servicing in your budget. Check local service availability and how warranty visits are arranged. For filters and other replacement parts, confirm the correct model and whether supplies are readily available.

Finish with a written shortlist of must-have conditions. If a model does not fit the space or the installation requirements, remove it before spending time on smaller feature differences.
